We want to introduce our Volunteer of the Month (September 2023), Donna Witte! She has been with us for over two years, and you can find her preparing and serving our Bread of Life Meal on Tuesdays! Her smile is contagious, and her fun and friendly personality is one of a kind! She has such a great heart for the ministry, and we are so thankful for her servant’s heart!
What brought her to Discover Hope?
“It all began when I moved here 4 ½ years ago, and I was looking for a way to give back. I was working at True Value PT, and two individuals came in with DH shirts on, and they told me to stop in to see what we were all about. I would drive by Discover Hope and felt drawn to stop and check it out. After a year of praying about volunteering, I felt drawn by God to stop in, so I finally did and have been here ever since.
When asked what motivates her to give back to the community with Discover Hope, she says: “The people I meet that come into the building, the volunteers, the people that come in that I can serve, and the ability to make new connections. It widens your view of humanity and is a humbling experience that we, as humans, can work on.
It is a humbling, rewarding, and eye-opening experience that has changed me in ways that would not have happened if I had stayed in my comfort zone.”
Her advice to those who want to volunteer but haven’t yet:
“Volunteering is rewarding, for retirees or anyone, it gives you a purpose. Everyone should have a purpose because if you are a Christian, God tells us to serve others, I would encourage everyone that volunteering isn’t a lifelong sentence. It’s 4 hours a week and everyone has 4 hours to give. It puts us in a position of caring for others and it just overall makes us better people when we can shine Jesus’ light onto others. A smile goes a long way. Jesus said be the light and we can be the light here.”
One fun fact about Donna:
She rode her own Harley for 40 years and was a pioneer for Harley Davidson woman riders in Maine, her home state!
