God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
1 Peter 4:10-11
When you arrive at Discover Hope, you are greeted by friendly faces and the kindness of God’s glory. Amidst all the amazing volunteers, is Jana Hettinga. Jana was called to do the Lord’s work at Discover Hope two months ago. When the opportunity was presented to her, she did not hesitate to say yes. Jana and her family have experienced the horrors of addiction first hand. Jana’s son has felt the grip of Satan to a depth that most would not understand. Discover Hope became and continues to be a critical part of her son’s ongoing recovery. In Jana’s words, “God saved my son. I truly believe God gave me the blessing of my son’s life.”
Jana helps with the front desk by checking in guests, answering phones and whatever she is called to do. She even helped set up the daily lunch when Jen was gone for a day to spend time with her daughter.
Jana’s life revolves around taking care of her son and grandchildren. Yet, she has found a bit of sunshine in giving back to God.
“Volunteering at Discover Hope gives me a purpose. It is a humbling experience. It has given me a better perspective of what Discover Hope is all about,” Jana said.
She wants everybody to know how this experience can open their eyes to the people out there that need help. She dealt with her son’s addiction but did not realize the struggle of others. She is more accepting of others now that she understands what addiction does and she has more compassion for those in need. Her faith is deeper knowing she was called to do the Lord’s work.
I asked Jana if she would encourage others to volunteer. “Absolutely!” she said, “the community needs to understand that addiction is a huge problem everywhere. Dropping in on a Tuesday night worship at Discover Hope can be a start to realizing the help that is needed and how to get involved.”
Jana also mentioned that she wished more community members were aware of what Discover Hope does for the community. The ministry is wrapped around helping those in need through Christianity.
For someone watching Jana from the sidelines, I feel her love for God! She has helped more people than I can count. She receives her strength from God and that has inspired my relationship with God to grow.
